The top plug and bottom plug of the Conventional Cementing Plug are constructed of selected materials to reduce drilling time and thereby save costs. The bottom plug separates the cement from the drilling mud and has a rubber diaphragm that opens as soon as the plug falls on the cement floating collar. The top plug acts as a follower plug to move the cement and land on the upper end of the bottom plug.

The body consists of a hard rubber insert molded from an elastomer. This allows the drill bit to break the hard rubber without tearing the rubber and aluminum like a conventional plug, thereby significantly reducing the drilling time. No metal parts are used, so the plug is PDC drillable.
